Unbeatens Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez agreed Tuesday to fight each other Sept. 14 in a pay-per-view bout at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

“He’s a very good fighter with great speed and strategy, but I believe I can get my hands on him,” Alvarez told The Times in a telephone interview from his promoter Golden Boy Promotions’ office in Los Angeles.

The fight will be for Alvarez’s World Boxing Council super-welterweight belt, at a catch-weight of 152 pounds, officials said.

Mayweather Jr. announced the bout on his Twitter account.

The 22-year-old Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 knockouts) drew nearly 40,000 to the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, in April, defeating previously unbeaten Austin Trout by unanimous decision, and Mayweather (44-0, 26 KOs) earned a guaranteed $32 million in his unanimous decision over Robert Guerrero earlier this month.

Mayweather Jr. advisor Leonard Ellerbe and Alvarez promoter Richard Schaefer both assessed the bout as “the biggest in boxing.”

Alvarez, who’ll turn 23 in July, said he had goosebumps when agreeing to the deal Tuesday. He said he agreed to “everything!” at the session, declining to specify terms.

“They were very difficult negotiations,” Alvarez said through an interpreter. “This is a big fight. The most important thing is we got the deal done.

“Now, I’ve just got to work hard in the gym because I know I’ll win this fight.”

Mayweather Jr., 36, hasn’t fought with such a brief layoff since 2001. He emerged mostly unmarked with the exception of a swollen finger in beating Guerrero.

“What Floyd made perfectly clear was that he wanted to fight this kid,” Ellerbe said. “He wants to fight the biggest and best fights possible. This is no surprise. He’s been doing this whole career, from the time he was 23 and fighting Diego Corrales. It hasn’t changed.”

Asked if the experience advantage was the major motivator in agreeing to the bout — Mayweather Jr. also declined to discuss terms — Ellerbe said, “We don’t make fights thinking we’re not going to win. He’s the best. Some naysayers didn’t believe that he’d fight this guy so soon, but he’s been proving people wrong his entire career.”

The bout will be televised by Showtime pay-per-view, the second bout in Mayweather’s 30-month deal with the network. Mayweather was recently ranked as the highest-earning pro athlete in U.S. sports.

“He’s transcended the sport and changed the way boxing has become a business,” Ellerbe said. “He’s the face of the sport and continues to elevate the sport with this fight.”

Alvarez said he was mildly surprised Mayweather Jr. agreed to the bout. Alvarez said he resumed training in Mexico one week after beating Trout and will return to training in Santa Monica two months before the bout.

Mayweather’s father and trainer, Floyd Sr., told reporters last month he’d advise his son to take the Alvarez bout now before the powerful puncher becomes more skilled.

“It’s a flattering comment, but I am ready now,” Alvarez said.

“This is the biggest fight you can make, the fight everyone was hoping for,” Schaefer said. “These guys delivered it.”

The nonetheless mouth-watering Peterson-Matthysse fight in Atlantic City is part of a double-header that sees Britain’s Kell Brook challenge Devon Alexander for the IBF welterweight title.

Tickets go on sale on Wednesday, April 10th at noon ET at the Boardwalk Hall box office. Peterson-Matthysse Tickets priced at $250, $125, $75, $50 and $25, plus applicable taxes and service charges.
Lamont Peterson (31-1-1, 16 KOs) picked up where he left off in February with an eighth-round technical knockout win over Kendall Holt. Peterson spent part of his youth homeless on the mean streets of Washington, D.C. Peterson-Mathysse will take place at a catchweight of 141 pounds.

Lucas Matthysse (33-2, 31 KOs) a native of Argentina, holds the WBC interim title, bounced back from two controversial split decision losses to Zab Judah and Alexander, each in his opponent’s hometowns, to score five straight.

For Peterson to have a victory against one of the most avoided guys in boxing, that would be big and definitely make a big statement. The same goes for Lucas Matthysse. He’s been waiting for an opportunity to show he is ready to take on and win against an opponent like Lamont Peterson.

A must-see battle of two exciting champions! Canelo Alvarez vs Trout Tickets priced at $300, $150, $100, $50, $25 and $10, plus applicable taxes, fees and services charges, are on sale now and available for purchase. Boxing fans if you want to see this fight live and feel the excitement then buy Canelo Alvarez vs Trout Tickets. Diehard fans are dying in anticipation just to buy Canelo Alvarez vs Trout Tickets. The two boxing superstars are the biggest crowd drawers in the sport.

Canelo Alvarez is not great in any one particular area. He’s very good at just about everything. He can be easy to reach at times, but he can take a punch. He hits hard with both hands. He always showed talent, but in the past years, he is becoming more formidable mentally. He thinks well in the ring, is able to set a guy up, and is generally becoming more cerebral in the ring. He knows where to put the punches.

Austin Trout is a southpaw, but that might not help him as much as anticipated. Against Cotto, Trout was facing a fighter whose left hook was far and away his best weapon. While the left is probably Alvarez’ best punch, his right hand is robust and carries a lot of clout. That’s a always a good punch to have in your arsenal against a lefty. Sometimes, that left to the body is more available when facing a lefty, whose right side will be closer. But the advantages in openings of facing of an opposite-handed fighter also apply to Trout.

This, after the boxer’s recent announcement via Twitter two weeks ago, that IBF welterweight champ Devon Alexander is the front runner to land the bout geared for the popular Mexican holiday weekend.

Guerrero, 29, (31-1-1, 18 KOs) of Gilroy, California has long been positioning himself with a fight against the unbeaten Mayweather Jr. He moved up to the welterweight division (147 pounds) last year after previously campaigning in the super featherweight and lightweight divisions (130 and 135 pounds) in the previous three years.

Guerrero has been successful at his two campaigns in the welterweight class, scoring big wins against Selcuk Aydin and Andre Berto in 2012. He is the current holder of the interim WBC crown of which Mayweather is the regular champ.

Mayweather Jr. also disclosed today that he will be showcasing his talents via another US network, CBS/Showtime instead of rival HBO which has been his home for the last 16 years beginning in 1997. Mayweather Jr. and HBO’s partnership produced hundreds of millions of dollars in pay-per-view generated income during that time period.

Mayweather Jr. inked a record breaking six-fight career deal with CBS/Showtime beginning with his May 4th bout with Guerrero. The deal will enable him to fight exclusively for the network until mid-2016, meaning that he will fight six times in a 30-month period.

The unbeaten Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KOs) only fought twice in the last two years, a knockout win against former WBC welterweight champ, Victor Ortiz in 2011 and a UD win against WBA light middleweight champ, Miguel Cotto last May 5, 2012.

This will be his first fight after serving two months in a federal prison for a domestic battery conviction last year.

A formal announcement via a press conference of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. versus Robert Guerrero bout is expected in the coming days.

Top Rank chief Bob Arum said yesterday that the 6,000-capacity Radio City Music Hall in midtown Manhattan in New York will be the venue of one of the most keenly-awaited matchups of the year.

“We’ll be coming out with an official announcement very soon,” said Arum from the Top Rank headquarters in Las Vegas.

Donaire, who had a breakout 2012 with four smashing victories, meets a livewire opponent in Rigondeaux, a two-time Olympic and two-time world amateur champion.

Donaire had initially wanted a faceoff with Abner Mares, the Mexican-American who is under the promotional banner of Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions (GBP).

But Top Rank and GBP simply could not come to terms, paving the way for Arum to just zero in on Rigondeaux, who is also under contract with him.

Donaire, 30, brings to the ring a 30-1-0 win-loss-draw record with 20 knockouts and the fearsome reputation of a deadly finisher.

Rigondeaux, 32, is obvioulsy undaunted as he is drooling over the prospects of colliding with the Filipino-American puncher.

Meanwhile, Arum said it’s green and go for the April 6 he is staging at the Venetian Hotel in Macau, featuring Top Rank’s newest acquisition, Chinese Olympic legend Zou Shiming.

The card will be headlined by the world flyweight title clash between Fil-Am Brian Viloria and Mexican Juan Francisco Estrada.

“If the fight doesn’t happen, it’s not my fault. I’m not going to accuse him of being greedy or judge him. It’s hard to judge. It’s his title, it’s his life, [but] I believe he is avoiding me,” said Pacquiao, 33, who offered to accept 45% of the pay-per-view revenue no matter the victor to finally cement a welterweight bout with Mayweather.

Pacquiao (54-4-2, 38 KOs), voted “Fighter of the Decade” for the 2000s by the BWAA, will battle Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez for a fourth time on December 8 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Conversely, Mayweather (43-0, 26 KOs), who was released to the public on August 3 after serving 63 days behind bars at the Clark County Detention Center for beating his former sweetheart two years ago while a couple of their children watched, is not scheduled to enter the squared circle at any point soon.

The 35-year-old Mayweather, a longstanding WBC world welterweight champion who was named The Ring “Fighter of the Year” in 1998 and 2007, last fought on Cinco de Mayo when he defeated powerful Puerto Rican icon Miguel Cotto by unanimous decision to gain the WBA world light-welterweight belt in “Sin City.”
Rumors recently surfaced that Pacquiao and the convicted domestic abuser planned to battle each other twice in 2013.

Roger “Pit” Perron is a venerable boxing trainer from Brockton (Mass.) who now works with Mike and Rich Cappiello at their gym, Cappiello Brothers Boxing and Training.

Perron predicts that Mayweather, a 1996 bronze medalist who already owned a decent rap sheet from convictions on battery and assault in 2002 and 2005, would outclass Pacquiao in a match.

“Nobody will ever beat Floyd until he retires,” said Perron, 75, who worked in the 1980s with International Boxing Hall of Famer Marvelous Marvin Hagler at the Petronelli Brothers Gym. “If Floyd and Manny ever get together, mortgage the house on Mayweather.”

Pacquiao, the first pugilist in history to win 10 world crowns in eight separate divisions, is a truly great fighter blessed with booming power and brilliant footwork.

Nevertheless, Mayweather, an enormous talent who has captured nine world titles in five different weight classes, is a more complete boxer and he would trump “The Fighting Pride of the Philippines.”

Unfortunately for Pacquiao and boxing fans across the globe, Mayweather is disgustingly greedy and absolutely afraid that the Filipino slugger could blemish his pristine record.

It is now more evident than ever that Floyd Mayweather “is avoiding” Manny Pacquiao like a plague.

The long-awaited matchup between Filipino champion Nonito Donaire Jr. and Mexican slugger Jorge Arce will take place in December.

Bob Arum of Top Rank was quoted as saying yesterday that the Donaire vs Arce fight, shelved a couple of times before, will happen at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, and not in Mexico as previously planned.

“It’s a done deal,” Arum told boxing analyst.

Arum, however, has yet to officially announce the fight set Dec. 15 or exactly a week after Manny Pacquiao faces Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand.

Donaire spoke about the Arce fight last week in Manila, saying the reason it has never happened is because Arce is asking for “too much money.”

Then he gave Arum two weeks to set up the fight or he will just rest the remainder of the year. It’s possible that Arce finally got what he wanted as long as the fight is held outside of Mexico.

Donaire, the WBO super-bantamweight champion, doesn’t think that the 33-year-old Mexican is afraid of him because “he’s a veteran” and so “it has to be the money.”

Arce, the former bantamweight champion, said he’s only asking for “what the fight is worth.”

“He has never faced a fighter of my qualities. He has never faced anybody with guts, heart. Knock me down and I get up. I have never given up and have no respect for him,” he told www.boxingscene.com.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao trained hard at the Wild Card Gym yesterday and impressed his chief trainer, Freddie Roach, with his condition.

Pacquiao spent three weeks in General Santos City, and will be in Los Angeles for the final phase of his training for the Dec. 8 fight with Marquez.

It’s up to Roach if he wants Pacquiao to begin sparring today (a Tuesday in LA) or give Pacquiao a couple more days to shake off the jetlag.

How to beat Juan Manuel Marquez convincingly will be the main focus of Manny Pacquiao Los Angeles camp which opens Monday (Tuesday in Manila) at the Freddie Roach-owned Wild Card Boxing Gym in Hollywood.

There will be the usual roadwork, punching the mitts, heavy bag, double end and speed ball and sparring, but highlights of the second leg of preparations spread for five weeks before the team proceeds to Las Vegas, site of Pacquiao’s fourth fight against Juan Manuel Marquez, will be the mapping out of strategies on how to erase the doubts that marked the combatants first three fights.

“Besides the nitty-gritty in preparations, Freddie and I will be studying carefully the tapes of our previous fights as well as other fights of Marquez to determine what kind of strategy we will be using to win convincingly, if possible via knockout,” Pacquiao told People’s Journal in a brief telephone interview upon his arrival in LA Saturday night (Sunday in Manila).

“As both of us, Freddie and I have promised, we have to win by KO o kung hindi man mapatulog, kailangan bugbog-sarado ang kalaban para mahinto na ang mga sali-salita na hindi kumbinsido ang panalo ko or I robbed him of victories,” the eight-division world champion and ‘Fighter of the Decade’ honoree said.

Pacquiao and his team rested the whole day Sunday to remove the jet lag brought about by a 13-hour direct flight from Manila although he said that had it not been a Sunday, he could have opted to start training.

“I am really very eager na na mag-start. Busog na busong na anko sa ensayo bago pa lang lumipad dito kaya I feel na my body wouldn’t mind if we start early. Ang lakas na ng katawan ko as a result of our three-week stamina-building regimen while in General Santos City,” he said.

Assistant trainer Buboy Fernandez agreed, saying “since we started preparations in GenSan, hataw talaga si Manny sa ensayo. That’s why it’s no surprise na madali niyang ma-recover ang stamina nya.”

“Actually, yung strategy, nasimulan na rin naming pag-aralan while still in GenSan,” Buboy, Pacquiao’s boyhood buddy and fonfidantt, disclosed. “Nadiskubre kasi naming na si Marquez pala nagsimula sa boksing as left-handed Yung pagiging right-handed niya, lately lang niya na-develop.”

“That’s probably the reason why Manny finds his style difficult. Bukod sa alam ni Marquez kung saan siya pupunta para mag-copunter, malakas din talaga ang kaliwa niya,” Buboy said. “Kaya pagsabak ni Manny dito sa Wild Card with Freddie, madali na.”

The Pacquiao-Marquez I in 2004 ended in a draw despite the Filipino icon’s dropping the Mexican legend three times right in the first round. Had one of the judges though correctly scored the three knockdowns, Pacquiao would have won via unanimous decision.

The Pacman won the second outing four years later via split decision, sending Marquez at the seat of his pants once in the third round. The Pacman settled for a majority decision the third time around only last year on the strength of an overwhelming advantage in power punches thrown and connected.

The two finest pound-for-pound fighters meet in Chapter 4 (Pacquiao vs Marquez 4) of their historic rivalry on December 8 (December 9 in Manila) at the MGM Grand Arena.

WBC super bantamweight champion emeritus Toshiaki Nishioka of Japan wants to show that he’s the best fighter in the world at 122 pounds. The 36 year old Japanese southpaw who comes off a 54 week layoff when he faces WBO/IBC champion “The Filipino Flash’ Nonito Donaire (Nishioka vs Donaire) at the Homew Depot Center on Sunday morning (Manila Time) told the Manila Standard “I want to show everybody that I am the best in this weight class and that’s what I’ll show.”

Nishioka said he is in “very good condition” adding “I am ready to win of course.”

The 36 year old Japanese said his age or the long layoff don’t bother him. He said “my only motivation is to fight the best and I wanted this fight against Donaire and that’s why I waited.”

Nishioka who watched Donaire win the IBF title from South Africa’s lanky Jeffrey Mathebula also at the Home Depot Center last July said although Donaire is known as a terrific counter-puncher in the Mathebula fight “he kept coming forward and I learned that he can fight that way also.”

Stressing that he wants “to give the fans an exciting fight” Nishioka who conceded that Rafael Marquez over whom he won an impressive twelve round decision was “tough and a difficult fighter” but that against Donaire he is “excited so I don’t think about the toughness.”

Stating that he’s been “looking forward to this fight (against Donaire) since January, Nishioka disclosed that he’s “been in the gym since then.”

The Japanese champion whose last defeat was eight years ago said Donaire’s left hook with which he knocked out IBF/IBO flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan in the 5th round and WBO/IBO bantamweight champion Fernando “Cochulito” Montiel whom he demolished in two rounds is “probably his strongest punch” while stating that in his case, the left straight was the main weapon.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum noted that Nishioka “is a terrific fighter. He hasn’t lost a fight for 7 or 8 years. I’ve seen him fight Rafael Marquez so Donaire is going to have his hands full.”

IBF/WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (29-1, 18 KO’s) will be defending against a fighter that may be near the end of his career in former WBC super bantamweight champion Toshiki Nishioka (39-4-3, 24 KOs) next month on October 13th at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California.

Nishioka is 36 now, and he’s coming off of a fight he barely won against a shot Rafael Marquez last October. Nishioka look to me to be a world class super bantamweight any longer in that fight, and seemed to have lost a half dozen steps from his prime six years previous.

Nishioka still has a 16-fight winning streak dating back eight years, but it’s kind of empty because none of those fighters were as good as the current top fighters in the super bantamweight division such as Guillermo Rigondeaux, Abner Mares, Donaire and Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. Nishioka was a good fighter during his prime but never in the class of those guys. He was just one of those fighters that took advantage of a weak era dor the super bantamweight division.

There’s probably little Nishioka can do to try and win the fight against Donaire. He just doesn’t match and he’s going to get dominated in this fight.

I this could be the last fight of Nishioka’s career if he gets beaten as bad I think he will. He’s stuck around a little too long and he’s facing the wrong opponent. It’s too bad Nishioka didn’t fight someone like Rigondeaux, Mares of Vazquez Jr. first because it would have been nice to have him filtered out before he got to Donaire.

Nishioka will have to try and score a knockout to win this fight, and the odds of him doing that are probably not good. He looked like he’d lost some of his reflexes in the Marquez fight last October and he’s going to be able to land much because of his lack of speed.

The October 13th Donaire vs Nishioka clash heats up! The preparations are all set including the massive promotions of hotels, closed circuit viewings and even cinema outlets worldwide.
