World super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire is anticipating a clash of speed and power when he battles Japanese boxer Toshiaki Nishioka on October 13 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. Donaire will defend his IBF and WBO super bantamweight titles. Also at stake in the fight is The RING’s super bantamweight belt and the WBC diamond championship.
The Donaire vs Nishioka clash will pit the two top-ranked super bantamweights in the world against each other and will have four world title belts at stake.
“He is the speed king, and I am ‘The Filipino Flash,’” Donaire said. “So there’s going to be a clash of speed and a clash of power as well.”
“He has a tremendous straight punch, I have a tremendous hook. He can end the fight with one punch and I can end the fight with one punch,” he added.
Donaire said the fight will ultimately boil down to who has the best game plan. “It’s a matter of… having the right timing and capitalizing on mistakes,” he said.
Nishioka is rated No. 1 in The RING’s super bantamweight rankings, while Donaire is at No. 2. But the Japanese boxer has been campaigning at the division for a long time, while Donaire has only fought at super bantamweight twice.
Donaire has also been criticized for failing to bring his crowd-pleasing ways with him into the super bantamweight division. In his bouts against Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. and Jeffrey Mathebula, he knocked down both fighters but could not put them away completely.
Donaire is hopeful that his bout against Nishioka will produce fireworks.
“I think he (Nishioka) is going to go all out. It’s what I’m hoping for,” he said, adding that his previous opponents were “guys who ran.”
“(Vic) Darchinyan and (Fernando) Montiel came to fight,” Donaire said, referring to the two boxers he knocked out in the lower weight divisions. “The champions fought and they came to win, not to survive.”
Donaire knows he is in for a tough fight against Nishioka, who has not lost a boxing match in eight years and is highly motivated to prove that he is the best in the division. The Donaire vs Nishioka tickets are already available online so buy now to watch the fight live.
