Pacquiao willing to fight Mayweather for a lesser purse

Manny PacquiaoBut wants equal share of PPV revenue

Eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines is willing to fight unbeaten American star Floyd Mayweather Jr. for a lesser guaranteed purse, but is adamant that he deserves an equal share of the pay-per-view (PPV) revenue.

Speaking with ANC’s Headstart, Manny Pacquiao emphasized that he was willing to face Floyd Mayweather anytime.

“Willing ako na lumaban sa kanya. Depende na lang sa kanya kung gusto n’ya akong labanan,” he said. (I’m willing to fight him. It depends on him if he wants to fight me.) (read another article about Pacquiao willing to lower guaranteed prize vs Mayweather)

Mayweather sent a tweet last January 11, wherein he challenged Pacquiao to “Step up, punk,” and agree to a May 5 fight date.

But negotiations for the mega-fight fell apart anew when the two camps failed to agree on a fight date. Mayweather also refused to give Pacquiao an equal share of the PPV revenue, something the Filipino boxer could not accept.

“Kung magkano ‘yung guaranteed n’ya, kahit hindi ko na pantayan. Basta 50-50 lang kami sa pay-per-view, walang problema,” Pacquiao said. (Even if he has a bigger guaranteed purse than me, that’s fine. There’s no problem as long as we have a 50-50 split on the pay-per-view revenues.)

The Filipino boxer said he is fine with a $50-million guaranteed purse and a 50% share of the PPV revenue. Pacquiao explained that Mayweather instead offered him a much lesser guaranteed purse and no share of the PPV revenue. (read also Mayweather rejects Pacquiao 50-50 offer)

“Ang offer n’ya, eto ‘yung guaranteed (purse) ko, mababa. Eto ‘yung guaranteed (purse) n’ya. Tapos, wala na akong share sa pay-per-view. Lugi tayo dito,” he said. (He offered me a low guaranteed purse and no share of the pay-per-view. I would get shortchanged.)

“Pag pumayag ako na wala akong pay-per-view, parang pagtatawanan ako ng mga tao, na parang ganito kabobo si Manny Pacquiao,” he added. (If I accept that offer, people will laugh at me and say that I’m stupid.)

But according to Pacquiao, there’s a reason Mayweather wants to get the larger share of the pie.

“Sinabi n’ya sa team member ko na nag-visit sa kanya, sabi n’ya, ‘Pag hindi ako humingi ng malaki, eh kung matalo ako? Buti s’ya congressman s’ya, ako boxing lang hanap-buhay ko,’” Pacquiao said. (Mayweather told a member of my team, ‘If I don’t ask for a larger share, and then what if I lose? He’s fine because he’s a congressman, but I’m just a boxer.’) (read also Health Reason why Mayweather duck Pacquiao)

With the Mayweather fight off the table, Pacquiao instead agreed to face another undefeated American boxer, Timothy Bradley Jr.

“Undefeated s’ya at champion s’ya. Wala ng iba eh,” Pacquiao said. (He’s undefeated and a champion. There’s also no one else.)

But Pacquiao said Bradley should not be underestimated, especially given his habit of leading with his head.

Pacquiao plans to start training in Baguio City in April.
